How to protect your home while away on vacation

Vacation season is fast approaching! Unfortunately for many unsuspected homeowners, it is also the peak season for burglary. Many folks leaving their home unattended while vacationing will be coming back to a burglarized home. Often times, these unfortunate events can be avoided with proper precaution. Are you beginning to plan for the upcoming vacation season, and wondering how you can protect yourself from becoming a victim? Continue reading below our top tips on how to protect your home while away on vacation.

  • Security System

If you don’t already have one, greatly consider the option of having a security system installed in your home. This is one of the best ways you can protect your home while away on vacation. Depending on the alarm system, the features will include door and window sensors, motion sensors, and glass break sensors. Most of these systems can be monitored using your cell phone, allowing you to be remotely in control. In addition, most alarm systems will include smoke, and CO detectors, for further protection of your home. There are many providers to choose from. Do your research, and choose one that fits your budget, and needs.

  • Protect your valuables

Absolutely by no means should you leave anything of value in plain sight. Smaller items, such as jewelry, and money should be placed in a safe if you have one in your home. Otherwise consider renting a safety deposit box where you bank. Bigger items may require a little bit more imagination on your part. Remember, “Out of sight, out of mind”.

  • Spare keys

Criminals know where to look, and what to watch out for. They will most certainly check to see if you are keeping a spare key under the welcome mat, or a false stone. Simply put, do not make this mistake! Retreat all spare keys you may have hiding throughout your property. Even if you think there is no way anyone can possibly find them. Better safe than sorry!

  • Leave lights on or off? Is the burning question.

It goes without saying that you should NOT leave your lights on the entire time you are away on vacation. Not only will this inflate your electric bill, it will most certainly look suspicious! C’mon, no one leaves their lights on 24/7, even a dumb criminal knows this. Consider putting the lights in your home on an inconsistent timer. You can also purchase a smart system that allows you to remotely control the lights in your home via your mobile phone.

  • Don’t over share!

In a world of technology, and social media, it is easy to unintentionally share vital information that may tip off criminals of our whereabouts. In fact, this exact same thing happened to reality TV queen, Kim Kardashian. While in Paris, she harmlessly shared her whereabouts as per usual, and unlike other times, people with ill intent were paying attention. She happened to be in her room at the time of the burglary, but luckily was unharmed. Perhaps it’s best to wait until you’re back from vacation to post those gorgeous pictures of you on the beach? Something to definitely consider.

  • Ask your friends

A great, and easy way to protect your home while away on vacation is to ask that trusty neighbor, friend, or family member to keep an eye on your house while you’re away. Entrusting someone to check in on your property every now and then will give you the much-needed peace of mind, and added protection from burglars. Leave them with all information needed. Such as different ways of contacting you, particular instructions pertaining your home, and inform them of any deliveries coming, if any.
