How to prepare for bad weather delays when moving

When you are organizing a move it is important to be prepared for sudden, unexpected challenges. Unfortunately, certain situations we just have no control over. As much as we would like for everything to go as planned, unforeseen circumstances do happen when moving home. One such instance is when your move is cancelled or delayed due to severe weather conditions. No matter what season you are moving during; severe weather can always be a threat when relocating home. Although you may face a series of challenges to get everything back on track, there are steps you can take ahead of time to have a better hold on things if inclement weather becomes a concern. Read our tips below on how to prepare for bad weather delays when moving.

  • Check the weather forecast regularly

Check the weather forecast a week in advance, each day leading up to your moving day. This is an easy but very effective step in preparing for whatever weather may be coming your way. If there is serious weather on the way, with some notice in advance you will hopefully be able to prepare for it.

  • Safety first

Do what you need to in order to secure your personal safety first. Postponing your move is a huge and costly inconvenience, but no amount of hassle is worth your health. Don’t take chances. If you have to delay your move and wait for the bad weather to pass, do it.

  • Dress accordingly

Whatever the weather may throw at you on moving day, you must be comfortably dressed to get a lot of work done. Wear clothing that will maintain your comfort throughout the move. Wear non-bulky clothing that is easy to work in. On a cold, wet day, dress warm, and wear comfortable, non-slip waterproof footwear. On an intensely hot day wear breathable, lightweight clothing.

  • Pack accordingly

When moving during inclement weather it is highly recommended that waterproof packaging or another type of covering be used for fragile items, or those that may be water damaged. Conditions inside a non-insulated moving truck, driving at high speed can create an even colder environment. Packing items that can become brittle in very cold temperatures require extra care. Plastic wrap and furniture pads should be used to wrap furniture and other bulky items that are not in boxes while they are being moved out of your house. Your moving company should have these supplies on hand for your items.

  • Keep it clean and safe

Protect your doorways, floors, and carpets when moving during a rainy or snowy day. Use moving pads and plastic wrap, as the movers will be in and out of the house, potentially tracking in snow, sleet, and salt with their boots. This will also help prevent dangerous slip and falls that can lead to injuries, and items being dropped and broken. Create a cleared path from your home to the area where the movers can safely park. Ensure all walkways and driveways are clear. Use salt or sand to keep your pathways clear of ice. More on protecting your floors when moving.

In the event that you are moving during an intensely hot day, it helps to have a good supply of cold drinks to keep everyone well hydrated. Take frequent breaks and take it easy because moving is hard labor, especially when the heat becomes too intense. Supply towels for your movers to use to dry off.

  • Driving delays

Inclement weather creates a dangerous environment for vehicles on road, especially for large moving trucks. If you are moving during bad weather, you can expect transportation delays. Be patient and don’t put pressure on your movers. They are just doing their job in getting all of your belongings safely to their destination.

  • Essentials bag

It helps to prepare for bad weather delays when moving with a bag of essential items that will make your life that more comfortable for the next few days to come. Anything that you think you will need to be easily accessible, pack in your bag of essential items.
