Packing your garage for moving

Most of us use our garage to store a number of different items, varying in type and size. From big to small, sharp or heavy, packing the items in your garage shouldn’t be so hard. You will need packing supplies and a few quick and easy tips from us when packing your garage for moving. Please follow our tips below when packing your garage for moving.

  1. Assess the items in your garage and make a decision on what you are going to take with you to your new place. Easily replaceable items are not worth your time and money to transport. Packing items like your garbage can may prove to be a waste of time and effort, as it can be easily and inexpensively replaced. If you have spent a lot of money on your garbage can and wish to hold on to it, be sure to clean it before you pack it.
  2. Chances are your garage holds a lot of different hazardous items that you may be thinking of bringing along with you to your destination. Be mindful that some of these items are prohibited for transportation by Federal law due to their hazardous nature. Items such as fuel, oils, paint and paint thinners, propane tanks, chemicals, car batteries, and cleaning supplies. Most of these can be easily replaced upon arrival at your new home and are not worth the risk. Try using them up, giving away to your neighbors, or properly discard for recycling. Contact your movers and ask them about the list of forbidden items for transportation.
  3. For you smaller hand tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, hammers, etc., leave in your dedicated toolbox and shut it tight. If no special-purpose toolbox is available, use sturdy small or medium-sized boxes. These tools are known to be rather heavy and packing them in large boxes will quickly add to the overall weight, potentially causing the box to break. Use zip lock bags for smaller hardware parts that could otherwise go missing during transport.
  4. Original packaging for your electric power tools always proves to be the best protection. Remove any detachable parts, including the batteries, and pack them separately but preferably in the same box as the main body. Coil the power cord around the tool, wrap the entire body in bubble wrap and place the bundle into a moving box of suitable size.
  5. Take extra precautions when preparing sharp-edged instruments, such as knives, gardening sheers, pickaxes, etc. Use old towels or sheets of bubble wrap to cover the sharp edges or blades. Secure them in place with cable ties or heavy-duty tape.
  6. Group your long-handled garden tools, such as brooms, rakes, shovels, hoes, and tie together in a tight bundle. Wrap them in a large moving blanket and secure with tape. If possible, remove attachments beforehand or be sure to secure their open blades.
  7. Make sure to first drain the fuel from any of your gas-operated equipment, such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, and snow blowers. It is dangerous to leave even a small amount of fuel in gas-operated machinery during transport. Your movers will refuse to move these items even with a small amount of fuel in the tank.
  8. If your grill is equipped with a propane tank, regardless of whether the container is full or empty, you must remove it. It is not permitted onto a moving truck. Dispose of any unused charcoal as well.
  9. Most of the times, your bicycle can be simply loaded onto the truck as is. In other cases, bicycles should be dismantled and packed in a special shipment box designed specifically for that purpose. More on the methods of packing your bike for the move.
  10. If you are not to driving your own car of motorcycle to your next home, then you will need to contact a reputable transportation company to arrange for its transportation. For more tip on how to prepare your car for shipping.
