However, if you decide to do it yourself, you will need to plan extensively and take necessary precautions to ensure a successful, injury-free relocation process. If you don’t take the proper precautions and follow these moving safety tips, you can put yourself at risk for serious injuries such as falls, pulled muscles or broken bones.

Stretch

Do some light stretching exercises before you haul your furniture and boxes out to the moving truck. This will relax your muscles and get them ready for the heavy lifting.

Know your limit

Never take on more than you can handle, if something feels too heavy to lift safely, then it probably is. It is always best to ask for help than risk an injury that will jeopardize the entire moving process. All it takes is one slip or trip, and you could break a bone.

Use moving tools

Dollies, hand trucks and moving straps can all make lifting and carrying heavy items and furniture much easier. You can rent these tools from any moving supply retailer.

Pack correctly

Do not over pack your boxes; this may make them too heavy and difficult to handle potentially damaging items inside and or causing injury to the handler. Using similarly sized and weighted boxes makes stacking for hauling to the truck and packing into the truck much easier and simpler. More information on packing please read our helpful tips here.

Lift properly

When lifting a box or piece of furniture, always spread your legs apart and bend at the knees, never at the waist. Always keep your back straight and upright and lift with your legs, not with your back. Stand up slowly and hold the item close to your body while carrying it. If you have to turn, turn with your feet not your hips.

Ask friends/family for help

Enlisting the help of a few friends or extended family members to lighten the load is a great way to avoid injuries on moving day. Provide food and beverages to keep them fed, hydrated and happy.
